I have an inherent seasonal internal clock that urges me to embellish my living spaces accordingly. I’m always redecorating stuff. Whether we’re coming out of winter and I’m feeling all things spring or the holiday season looming on the horizon, the urge to refresh my living space rises. Resistance is futile!

We all know that one of the quickest ways to freshen up a room is by purchasing new throw pillows. Pillows for porches, couches, chairs, and beds…new pillows everywhere! Of course, once you see the prices of brand-new throw pillows, you may reconsider. Alternately, you can sew new slipcovers for the pillows that you have. But if you want to speed things up a bit, this might be the perfect time for a little cheating.

Did you know that you can make no-sew throw pillow covers without getting near your sewing machine? Just hit the fabric store and choose two or three coordinating fabrics and you’re good to go! The beauty of making covers (whether you’re sewing or doing no-sew) is that you can create the exact look you want. You never have to settle on a color or print — you get to choose what speaks to you! If you’re short on pillows, you can pick up a couple of pillow forms, as well.

These easy-to-make, quick covers are perfect for rooms (and porches) that need a seasonal change, a modified style, a pop of color, or for holiday inspiration!

Gather Your Materials and Supplies:

• Plain, square throw pillow inserts.
• Fabric — I typically use a piece of fabric that is 2 1/2 times the size of the pillow + plus 2” inches. These measurements do not have to be perfect. {In fact, if you want the bow ties to be a little longer than the one in these photos, just add a couple of extra inches to your fabric square.}
• Scissors or rotary cutter. If your fabric is a lot larger than 2 1/2 times the size of the pillows + 2” inches, then you’ll need to cut it down, as too much fabric makes the covers loose, and messy-looking.
• Ruler
• *Cutting mat — A cutting mat is not a necessity unless you are using a rotary cutter. But both rotary cutters and mats are some of the handiest tools in the sewing room.

No-Sew Throw Pillow Cover Directions

In these photos, my throw pillow inserts are 15” square. I’m using a 32” x 32” fabric square. I want to mention that you don’t have to get these measurements spot on. Close enough works just fine.

1. On a table, spread the fabric all the way open with the right side facing the table.

2. Place the pillow in the center of the fabric at an angle that looks like a diamond instead of a square.

3. Bring one corner of the fabric up and over one side of the pillow. Now repeat this for the opposite side.

4. When you bring the second fabric side over, you’ll want to fold the tip under, so it lies neatly. (It looks just like all of the gifts you’ve ever wrapped)

5. Now bring the last two fabric sides up and over the pillow.

6. Gather the two ends to tie a square knot. As you are tying them together, straighten and tuck the fabric at the corners until it makes you happy.

Tie the ends into a square knot and you’ve just freshened up the room!

Nothing is written in stone here…there are other ways to do it!

For example, save some money and skip purchasing the pillow forms. Instead, look around for throw pillows you may already have around your house and cover them up! Remember that depending on the size of the pillows you are covering, the fabric measurement may have to be adjusted.
