I’ve been hanging around needles, thread, and sewing machines my entire life having grown up with a mom and an aunt who had sewn most of their lives. Naturally, I inherited their penchant for all things stitch-related.
Let’s talk about the buttons, of which I am an avid collector. Please don’t confuse collecting buttons with using them. All sewists know that hunting and gathering fabric for ‘stash’ is not the same thing as sewing said fabric. Collecting fabric is a hobby in its own right (hey, I don’t make the rules). It’s the same way with buttons – only they are much cheaper.
Buttons are a Joyful Collection
Not only do they add flair to my sewing room (because who doesn’t love the touch of button-based decor?), but they’re also my secret weapon for jazzing up projects such as pennant banners. Want to turn plain old clothes into a mini art installation? Sew on some buttons and watch the magic unfold.
And let’s not forget the kids! They’re drawn to the vibrant colors and themed designs of a button collection like magnets. My own littles used to spend hours sorting through my button boxes, organizing them by color, size, or category. Of course, I encouraged it. It was all part of my master plan to indoctrinate the next generation into the world of sewing and embroidery. Hey, if sewing and handwork is booming (and trust me, it is), I like to think I had a hand in it.
So, there you have it, folks. Buttons: not just for fastening fabric, but as creative accents and endless amusement.
Sew on, my friends. Sew on.
